Would like to see Dubois get a shot. Definitely a fan of his, big kid with pretty good skill. Should translate well to the NHL.

not sure Sedlak is 3rd line material , he seemed slow at times ......cbj should address this via a cheap FA option

I expect we'll be acquiring a center through free agency/trade here soon. Losing Gagner and Karlsson would be 2 centers off the roster, even if Gagner only played some center. You have to take depth into account.

Paul,

Please forgive me for disagreeing, but this does not seem close to the Islanders trade at all. The CBJ gives up a tough asset to lose in Karlsson, but not Calvert, or Josh Anderson (who you for some reason believe is a low-level player because he had a high shooting percentage last year that netted him 17 goals. I just don't understand it).

That choice cost their 24th pick in a bad draft by most accounts. We have people ready to play center who can make the team next year and the 3rd or 4th line center if the CBJ cannot get their hands on the #1 center/scorer that they have said they are looking for.

Then the second part of the trade is Clarkson for a 2018 2nd round pick. You can probably pick up a replacement 2nd sometime in the next year, and the CBJ loses a huge salary problem. It sadly cost Chicago Hossa to get that large amount of relief, and tragic event that is a shame.

But Clarkson's injury is awful too, he isn't Hossa, and now we have 5.7 million more in cap space. Even if you flip the picks it seems like a good deal:

LV gets a #4 center and PK guy, a bad contract to get to the salary floor, and a 1st and 2nd round pick.

CBJ gets 5.7 million in cap relief and keeps everyone they wanted, including Jack Johnson, Korpisalo, Anderson, and Calvert.

Why is it so bad?

I tend to agree this isn't so bad. The key is can CBJ get a #1 center with the cap room or via a trade? We still have plenty of youth. As we experienced with the SJ-RJ trade you have to give up to get. We now have cap room to do both.

Giving up a first rounder in a weak draft (as per many experts) for basically getting Clarkson off the books sound like a fair deal to me , as for Karlsson , I liked his style of play and how he defended the net on the PK , but he's very replaceable.

The way I see it, Minny, NYI, Anaheim did those moves to protect key players , the cbj did this move to get rid of a contract that creates an anchor during the off season.....
